“Eye of the Beholder” Vol.2

A month or so ago I came across a blog giveaway of “Halloween Man” featuring a Plus Size heroine… You KNOW I entered and so glad I won one of the copies!

I finally was able to sit down and read it this week and at first I was worried that the BBW/Plus Size heroine was going to be the typical type case that I’ve seen in most publications… I was GREATLY surprised when she is a BRANIAC – a brilliant Doctor!

I enjoyed this comic not only for the connection with Dr. Lucy Chaplin but also with the villain in this story.  I can’t reveal more than this as you really NEED to read it to experience it yourself.  The story revolves around body image and acceptance two topics that are rarely seen in comics.  Truly a MUST READ!

I’m a Halloween Man fan now and purchased volume 3 and 4 so that I can read more.  I kind of wish it was a LONG NOVEL so that I can spend more time with Dr. Lucy and Halloween Man himself. Ha!
There was no question that I wanted to know more about the Author and what the future holds for my favorite comic heroine.  Here’s my interview with Drew Edwards and it touches on the subject on how Males face the stigma associated to liking Plus Size/BBW women.  Not many talk about this fact but we know that it exists and I have personally experienced it first hand with a couple of my relationships.
I am so PROUD and THANKFUL for bringing this character to life.  I’m glad you were able to rectify a “mistake” (as you put it.)  My Daughter is reading your comic as I type this and she won’t put it down.  As I stated to you – How I WISH I had a heroine MY SIZE when I was her age.  I may have been an even MORE amazing woman if I had.

Author: Drew Edwards & Beautiful Wife Jamie

What life event specifically had you decide to turn Lucy in to a BBW(Big Beautiful Woman)?

It wasn’t really any one thing, it was a lot of different things. The first one being, is that I had originally envisioned the character as plus-sized, so there was the desire to retroactively correct a mistake my younger self had made.

Another was that my wife Jamie, is a plus-sized model and musician. So, seeing the kind of misconceptions and mistreatment that full-figured women experience more first hand really was eye opening. As an entertainer and a public figure here in Austin, Jamie really opens herself up to a lot of comments, cat calls, and outright rudeness, but she always handles it with total class and charm.

This made me really ask the question of “how would a super-heroine deal with this?” And of course, very few comics are actively dealing with body image and body type as an issue. So, the idea of course is to provoke discussion. Because we can dress the issue up with science fiction trappings, it makes comic fans more open to reading about it.

Ninety nine percent of the reaction has been extremely positive I am pleased to say. So, I have more readers will find this new incarnation of Lucy, a good role model. Personally speaking, I’m attracted to full-figured women and it’s my comic. Certainly if I’m not pleasing myself with my own work, I’m doing something wrong. I know there must be quite a few comic fans, who want a superheroine with more meat on her bones.

Will you be introducing more BBW side kicks that are intelligent and skilled like Lucy?

I hadn’t intended on it, but that is a great idea! Hope you don’t mind if I borrow that. The fashion designer Millie Boyd will certainly crop again, as Lucy is now part of the plus-sized fashion world. Picking out outfits for her, has kind of become a past time of the creative team actually. I also have a couple of full-figured bad girls that are going to pop up soon. One of these characters, Dixie Witch, is great fun. She’s quite mad and I think everyone will like her.

When are the following comics being released?

The story in question takes place in issues 2-3 of our current Halloween Man ongoing, with issue three being a kind of epilogue. These are already (available digitally) on Just search “Halloween Man” and they are right there. No muss,no fuss, no waiting.

Is there anything special you’ll be doing for Halloween?

We’re going to have a giant sized issue! This issue will feature not one, but two new stories starring Lucy. One written by myself and another penned by blues singer Julian Dossett. It’s 156 pages and only a $1.99. So, well worth being one of your Halloween treats.

What is your plan(s) and goals?

We’re really trying to expand Halloween Man’s fan base. The response to Lucy’s story arc has been great, but there is still a lot of ground to cover. I want to see these characters continue to grow, expand, and inspire!
The best place to find Halloween Man on the web is through Monsterverse’s Comixology page.

Wow! I'm flattered and humbled that my comic effected you emotionally. Thank you.

It's the truth! My Daughter has an eating disorder and bouts of low self esteem. My Son has also asked why there's no large boys and men that are NOT the butts of jokes. Finding strength to characters they and I can relate to is a huge task that I rarely find.
Thank you for taking that leap of faith and may it bring you success!

Yay! Good luck and can't wait to let you know if you won one!

Hi Jessica, and thanks for the kind words! We are definitely aiming to publish it on Steam when it is done, and we will probably enter it to Greenlight at a time before that. But at the moment we still think it’s a bit early for us, because there is a fair share of production left and we dont want to be diratscted, hehe.

I've enjoyed the adventures of Solomon Hitch and Lucy Chaplin since I first read their cross-over with Cassie Hack and Vlad a few years ago; the current story line is as notable for bringing forth Lucy as more an equal partner/science-hero in her own right as it is for her physical transformation. Ms. Chaplin emerges as a sort of female Doc Savage figure, if the Doc had an adolescence and early adulthood more devoted to outright thrill-seeking than crime-fighting. As someone who has done creative work in the gaming industry, I welcome and encourage other writers who push for diversity and unconventional characters; while obviously mainstream entertainment (including comics) have concerns about commercial appeal, it's absurd to have narrow limitations in cast and setting in a medium where imagination is literally the ONLY determining factor. And indie comics are where ideas catch on and bubble up to the bigger venues (same as in music, film, literature and all other creative forms really). Wonderful to see Drew and his book getting increased exposure.

Thank you! That is the big picture here on my blog. Be the images, words and sharing of such works to broaden the spectrum of our diluted and stringent avenues of media.
Please let me know if you know of other authors and artists that are breaking the barriers. I would love to encourage their work and share it with my readers and followers.
