Holiday Dinner Away From Our Kitchen

Each year the kiddos look forward to a feast with all the trimmings.  After being so poor, homeless and knowing what hunger felt like for YEARS the Holidays were the most stressful times of my life.  We were fortunate to have strangers, community members and Teachers lend a helping hand and always had the free turkey with canned goods given to us during these times.

Thanks to these caring souls my children have nothing but fond memories that over shadow the dark times we experienced through the year.  I want to thank them and hope they know the lasting impression of GOOD they’ve left to last us for the rest of your lives!

It’s not surprising that my children still ask for turkey and ham for our Holidays now that we’re at a much better financial place than we were before.  They’ve been torturing me with their Christmas music since last week – even though I make sure I sing along with them and share in their cheer regardless.

The dilemma these couple of years is our oven.  It hasn’t worked for years and it’s a wall unit that we were told by the Gas Company repair man that we shouldn’t even turn it on as it was not stable.  So my hunt for a “ready made” feast starts each time November rolls in.  Finding ready cooked meals that don’t require reheating has been almost impossible.  Our neighbors all have their ovens in use during these times even though they’ve said they would work around a schedule – sweet aren’t they?   But I can’t add stress to someone else’s Holiday and family time.

So, this year I have decided to find a location that will have a buffet with turkey and ham to meet my children’s request.  So here’s what I’ve found so far in the Los Angeles area.

Let me know of any FAVORITES you’d like me to add to this list and maybe try out this year!

Once we’re done with our dinner we’ll have a fresh batch of tamales we’ll be delivering to our community’s Seniors and those home bound due to illness.  Many are forgotten by their own families or have no family to care for them.  They will feel loved and appreciated no matter how small our gesture and appreciate our presence.

My children and I are continuing to return the kindness awarded to us… AND for THAT we give THANKS!

Happy Holidays everyone and feel free to leave a comment or email me for some Holiday cheer!  We have LOTS to pass around.
